Opening Reception Friday November 13, 7-10pm
Paul Petro Contemporary Art is pleased to present new paintings by Gary Evans. A few words from the artist:
Here and There is a group of recent paintings that are inspired by local spaces, things I encounter on an almost daily basis.
Above and beyond the commonplace colloquial usage, Here and There references several approaches to paintings, with a subjective interpretation of forms found in nature, an interior imaginative process that happens ‘here’, internally, and ‘there’ being that objective space of literal interpretation, translating the look of nature, at a distance, through viewing. Unsurprisingly, these lines become blurred in the act of painting as the work in progress can take on a life of its own.
To still the world, make some sense out of the density and entanglement of, say, the growth on the riverbank, is a way to consider the strangeness of the natural world. Its constant change, the speed of its growth, is hard to measure. Its presence is both temporary and eternal, part of a web of resilience that permeates my experience of the world.
Painting becomes an intermediary, a space to report on my ongoing attempts to understand. Considering these familiar spaces, objects and environments can become meditative. Somewhere between perception and memory, between here and there, the act of painting can hold new life.
