Karen Henderson

1,089 pictures of this floor with a different pool of water in each one

April 8- 29, 2000

Paul Petro Contemporary Art is pleased to present the premiere of Karen Henderson's 1,089 pictures of this floor with a different pool of water in each one. This new installation is a co-presentation with Toronto's Images Festival of Independent Film & Video.

In Henderson's site-related production, a 16mm camera is pointed towards the floor of the gallery. A pool of water is placed in the centre of the section of floor which is seen by the camera. A single frame is shot and the pool of water removed and then replaced by another one on the same spot. Another single frame is shot. This process is repeated 1,089 times. To show the film, it is transferred to video and a video projector is pointed towards the floor so that the projection is shown actual-size on the exact section of floor where the images were shot.

Originally from Scotland and now based in Toronto, Karen Henderson has shown her work in a variety of spaces - from an old nunnery in London, England to the roof of a house undergoing renovation to the Art Gallery of Ontario.
